Along with Delhi Uttar Pradesh was hit by the worst smog in its history on 6th November 2016. The pollution level was 8 times higher than normal in the state. This grim situation could be seen clearly in Lucknow very clearly. This situation can have more than one reasons; it could be the after-effect of bursting crackers on Diwali or the air current carrying the smog from Delhi towards UP. Whatever the reason, every single citizen of the state can feel the repercussions. Trying to rectify the alarming increase in pollution, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav called in for a meeting with all concerned departments on 7th November, 2016.
At the meeting, the CM directed the officials to get together and come up with a solution to curb this smog. He ordered the departments to ensure that rules and mechanisms to stop pollution are strictly implemented. Pollution Control Board and the Environment Department have been asked to ascertain the reason for this situation and come up with immediate solutions.
Proper garbage disposal, burning of waste, stopping pollution emitting vehicles, generators, and use of other machinery will be looked into by pollution control bodies. Crop residue will be disposed in a manner which is sustainable to environment. Akhilesh Yadav is fondly known as the ‘Green CM’ for his multiple initiatives in the past to help grow the green cover of UP.
‘Green UP-Clean UP’ programme initiated by Akhilesh Yadav saw five crore saplings planted in one day, along with building cycle tracks, banning the use of poly bags, bird festivals, animal safaris, etc.
