On 25th January 2016, the nation saw the launch of the first ever ‘Media Helpline’ in Uttar Pradesh.

To ensure time bound disposal of important files and the safety of journalists, Akhilesh Yadav, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh has announced 1880, a call centre specifically for journalists. This was initiated after Shahjahanpur based journalist, Jogendra Singh, was harmed due to sensitive nature of his work. Such a helpline will help journalists feel safe and will allow them to do their work, in peace.

This first-of-its-kind helpline will be accessible by people across the state of Uttar Pradesh and will be hosted by State Information and Public Relations Department. Akhilesh Yadav will be launching a computerised ‘letter and file tracking system’ to get over the slow bureaucracy and massive red-tape processes. He is often referred to as the ‘Digital CM’ because of initiatives like 1880, apart from others.

In Akhilesh Yadav’s leadership, a lot of importance has been given to historical structures and evidence. More than 40,000 pictures have been digitised for better safe keep along with literary work of eminent litterateur.

1880 helpline has been much appreciated by journalists, who feel safer now.
