World Sparrow Day is an international initiative by the Nature Forever Society of India with collaboration with Eco-Sys Action Foundation, France. It is observed on 20th March all over the world to raise awareness of house sparrows along with other common birds and the threats to their populations. There are different awareness campaigns carried out across the globe.The one held in Uttar Pradesh in 2016 was spectacular.
The state government, under Akhilesh Yadav, distributed 1,000 ‘sparrow houses’ in each district to provide more security to the birds, before the event. These bird houses have been designed to attract sparrow and are made of 100% natural wood. The young CM himself, setup a sparrow nest at his residence. On the World Sparrow Day he gave away ‘Gauraiya Mitra Puruskar’ to the person who could attract and conserve the maximum number of sparrows in the state.
There was a seminar organized in Janeshwar Mishra Park, Lucknow along with a cycle rally to carry forward the message of sparrow conservations. A photo exhibition, along with a film and book release on the same topic was also organized. The Uttar Pradesh government has also initiated efforts to provide educational bodies with the right apparatus to help protect the dwindling species. As per the CM’s orders there are continuous monitoring mechanism and felicitation process for the outstanding performance in this endeavour.
