Uttar Pradesh is the largest milk producing state of India and also home to the highest buffalo population in the country. This makes the average yield of milk higher than the rest of the country, put together. Majority of the rural population of the state is engaged either in the livestock breeding or dairy farming in one way or the other, making almost 30% contribution to the income of rural UP.

And now, thanks to our Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav, Amul will find a base in Uttar Pradesh. Amul spurred the White Revolution of India and is the world’s biggest dairy brand. It was only about time they ventured into the state. “We are putting up big plants in Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi and Saifai. This would be around Rs 600 crore of investments,” GCMMF Managing Director R S Sodhi announced at the UP Investors’ Conclave organised in Mumbai.

What this means for our state is, no longer will people be unemployed or have to leave their hometown in search of a job. Lakhs of farmers will reap direct benefit from this and will be able to sell their produce at reasonable rates. The consumers too will be able to enjoy unadulterated milk products which will be high in nutritional value. The Amul dairy setup will generate employment for a multitude of people in rural Uttar Pradesh. At present, Amul is collecting around 5 lakh litres of milk from Uttar Pradesh and giving almost Rs. 700 crore in return to the people directly. Akhilesh Yadav has also initiated UP Government’s Kamdhenu and Mini Kamdhenu Schemes in Uttar Pradesh to further amplify the dairy production.

All this is possible because there is a change in perception and outlook towards the state in general. The recent past has seen better infrastructure, more support from the government, and improved opportunities. The state is also equipped with a vast network of infrastructure and organizations existing in the dairy sector. To propagate this, Akhilesh Yadav said, “Invest in UP, especially in agro-based industries and we would cooperate without any discrimination.”

It is a great time to be living in Uttar Pradesh; with investments pouring in and big MNCs wanting to set up base here!
