The digital world has opened a plethora of opportunities for the people in today’s world and the young age Digital CM, Akhilesh Yadav of Uttar Pradesh is making the most of it. Ever since he came into power in 2012, the tech savvy CM has ensured that the government services are made online and paperless to improve transparency and approachability of the various schemes and initiatives. And Uttar Pradesh Police wasn’t left behind. The department has made their presence felt on social media platforms and how!

UP Police has been pro-active on the micro-blogging site and has acted as a grievance redressal platform for many. Let us see a few examples of how a tweet saved lives in the past:

#HelpFindDipti came to light a few months back when Dipti went missing in Ghaziabad. To inform the police, the employee of the young girl, SnapDeal, tweeted the following image to @UPPolice and Akhilesh Yadav.

Swift action from the CM and the police department ensured the safe return of the girl. Hence, #DiptiFoundSafe

Similarly, when an NRI’s aged father in Uttar Pradesh was harassed by some local goons, he decided to tweet UP Police for help. And it was no surprise when help reached his father in no time.

And the list can go on. From providing financial aid for education to building better roads, the chief minister has resolved multiple complaints on social media platforms.

To strengthen this method further to ensure help, Akhilesh Yadav worked out a strategy with Indian team of Twitter and has come up with ‘Twitter Sewa’. It will be a real time grievance redressal system which will direct all problems and complaints to the respective department. Under this, all of the police departments from 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh will have a unique twitter handle which will be launched by the CM on the 8th of September. The customer relationship management software has been especially designed to track complaints and their disposal status.

Twitter Sewa will be the country’s first such service and will be launched by UP Police DGP Javeed Ahmed, Twitter India’s MD RS Jaitley, and Operations Head Raheel Khursheed in Lucknow. The Twitter India team had also organized a two-day workshop for the police officers handling the dedicated twitter handles in each of the districts to help them get better equipped and familiarized with the software.

Twitter Sewa will automatically assign a code to every complaint sent to every district, using which the people will be able to check the status of their proceedings. This feature will help the officials to connect better with the people and solve their grievances and vice versa. “The social media platform has become an important and effective tool to reach out to people and connect with them. Thus, it’s need of the hour to adopt technology and use the platform. The updates of twitter thus will directly be monitored by the SPs and they will be able to feel the pulse of people and keep a tab on activities of their juniors too,” said UP Police DGP Ahmed. All the senior officials will be connected to Twitter Sewa using their phones as well, which will mean swift response. The media houses are anticipating this innovative move and waiting for the big launch.

UP Police with almost 50,000 followers on Twitter is making some path breaking changes under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav. An era of digitization has been reached within the state which will define the course of future in the country.
