Uttar Pradesh has a rich flora and fauna due to its amiable weather and soil conditions. The State Government has taken multiple measures to restore it or conserve the existing ones. From Ghariyals to exotic bird species, the state is home to all.  Since 2012, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav has signed MoUs with international bodies to protect the wildlife and organized multiple conventions and festivals to propagate it and encourage sustainability.

On 8th April 2016, a pair of endangered Gangetic dolphins got stuck in Sharda Canal. The CM, Akhilesh Yadav, provided immediate funds for a rapid response team for animal rescue. He also asked the senior officials to be present at the spot and monitor the entire operation minutely.

The entire affair lasted for 9 hours, before the Gangetic dolphins were rescued in the Dewa forest range, Barabanki. The pair was successfully captured, relocated, and released in Ghaghra river. The rescue was done by the wildlife wing of the UP forest department along with Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA)-India. Sources said it’s for the first time that a pair of Gangetic dolphins was rescued and it was possible only because the entire process was expedited by the People’s CM.
