Hockey is an important game in India and for Indians because it fetched laurels and six consecutive Olympic gold medals for the country. There are various hockey matches which are organized across the country to encourage more people to take part in this game. Uttar Pradesh too saw 35th All India K. D. Singh ‘Babu’ Invitational Prize Money Hockey Tournament 2016 which was played at Dhyanchand Sports College Stadium, Lucknow.
To promote the sport in Uttar Pradesh, the government under Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, doubled the prize money for ‘Babu’ Tournament! This was announced before the matches were started and will also be implemented in Women Hockey Tournament which will be played in Saifai, in April.
The winner will be given prize money of Rs. 2 lakh, second and third runner up team will be given Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 50,000 respectively. There is a special award for the Best Player. Some of the participating teams were Punjab And Sindh Bank Jalandhar, Air Force Delhi, Air India Delhi, SSB, MP Academy, SBI Bhopal. Uttar Pradesh will be seen hosting 9 hockey tournaments in 2016.
Such initiatives from the People’s CM has made the youth more interested in hockey and saw a great turnout during the matches. In the past too Akhilesh Yadav has given special emphasis on strengthening the basic sports infrastructure and developing the sports culture in the state. This can be seen in the modern sports facilities which have been provided since 2012, which includes International Cricket Stadium, Football Stadium, and MoUs signed with international bodies apart from other things.
