On the fateful day of 15th February 2016 there was an explosion in a scrap go-down in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh. This blast took four lives. According to the police authorities, the scrap dealers were trying to break open a grenade with a hammer to extract brass and mortar shells. A lot of times, to make ends meet, workers tread into dangerous areas, without permission and end up harming themselves.
When this news reached the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav, he extended his condolences to the families, offered Rs. 2 lakh to the kin of the deceased and instructed the SSP to look into it personally. As soon as the explosion took place, the bomb squad and fire fighters were called for. This was to ensure that there is no further danger to life and property.
Faizabad is home to more than half a dozen army units and the explosion took place near the cantonment. In the area, there are scrap pickers who venture into the fields to pick up bullet shells; this time, it proved fatal for a few. We hope workers will be more careful in future and avoid going into areas which might be unsafe for civilians, without permission.
Akhilesh Yadav has instructed to take measures so that this is not repeated in the future and no life is wasted due to such practices.
